The Federal Ministry of Education (FME) has reaffirmed its commitment to safe, inclusive learning through a three-day workshop in Abuja for 45 master trainers from 15 teacher training institutions.
The trainers are expected to extend the training to about 500 teachers and educators. The workshop forms part of the ministry’s collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Government of Japan and other development partners.
Skills covered by the workshop
The Master Trainers Workshop on Safe Learning Environment, Gender-Responsive Pedagogy and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Skills for Educators in Teacher Training Institutions covers:
- Gender-responsive teaching approaches.
- Safe learning environments.
- Prevention of and response to school-related gender-based violence.
- Use of ICT in teaching.
Teacher preparation and learner protection
Dr Uchenna Uba, Director of the College of Education, represented the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, at the workshop.
Dr Uba said wider access to education must be accompanied by protection, inclusion and effective learning. She highlighted the National Policy on Anti-Bullying in Nigerian Schools and the need to prepare teachers to recognise abuse, respond appropriately and protect learners’ dignity and wellbeing.
The ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to continued collaboration with UNESCO, Japan and the African Union on teacher development and inclusive education.
