Emeka Ihedioha, the former governor of Imo State, withdrew from the state governorship primary, according to PDP Action 2023, a group inside the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), because of an unfair and unjust process by the PDP national leadership prior to the primary.
The organization voiced concerns that the party’s national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, who is also a candidate and a supervisory official in the primaries, would not ensure that the primary process would be free, fair, and reasonable.
Today in Lagos, the Chrisland School and employee trial over Whitney’s passing will begin.
Recall that Ihedioha declared his resignation from the PDP governorship primary in the state in a letter dated March 27, 2023, written to the PDP National Chairman’s office.
In a statement released by the group’s chairman, Rufus Omeire, on Wednesday, he said: “In the first place, Ihedioha, who had been a devoted PDP member since 1999, was treated unfairly and unjustly by the party’s leadership.
As is his right as an Imo State native, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the party’s national secretary, expressed interest in running in the governorship primary elections. Therefore, it is only fitting that he not oversee the primaries in which he is running as he is the national secretary in office.
The fact that “Anyawu was himself screened as a candidate and later on signed the clearance certificate of the successful aspirants, including himself,” according to the group, was surprising.
According to Omeire, Section 47(5) of the PDP constitution mandates that the party specify in its rules the time of resignation for any national officers running for political office.
The statement stated, in part, that the party, which was governed by the suspended Rules, “refused to do so in order to give undu benefit to any national officer of the party, to sit tight in office and preside over primaries for which they may be candidates.”
According to the group, the PDP should “open the procedure for another credible candidate to join the contest in Imo State at this time, because if this is not done, Ayu would have succeeded in killing Imo PDP the way he has put PDP national on life support.”
