Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka and OPay have signed a memorandum of understanding for a 10-year scholarship programme expected to support 20 indigent students of the university each year.
OPay’s Head of Partnership, Mr I. K. Odiase, said each beneficiary would receive ₦300,000 annually. The programme is valued at ₦60 million over the 10-year period.
Scholarship and university partnership
The agreement followed a visit by an OPay delegation to UNIZIK. According to Odiase, the initiative is intended to help students with education expenses. He said UNIZIK was selected for the second phase following feedback from beneficiaries of an earlier phase.
OPay’s Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Mr Itoro Udo, said UNIZIK was the 26th tertiary institution to partner with OPay under the initiative and that the organisation aimed to reach 41 institutions by the end of the year.
Innovation challenge and career opportunities
Udo said OPay’s Innovation Challenge had involved about 48 universities and had been narrowed down to 10 teams. A UNIZIK team reached the boot camp. The top four teams are expected to pitch locally developed, technology-driven proposals at the grand finale to partners including Google, 3MTT, Visa and VERVE.
He also described OPay’s partnership with 3MTT as a route for outstanding students to gain internship and job-placement experience in financial technology and other corporate sectors before graduation.
UNIZIK’s response
Vice-Chancellor Professor Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie welcomed the partnership and expressed interest in further work on technology, innovation and accessibility. He mentioned the possibility of installing a lift in a university building to improve access, particularly for persons with disabilities.
The visit ended with the signing of the memorandum of understanding. The announcement did not give an application method or selection timetable for the scholarships.
